In New York in 1931, after nightfall, hundreds of thousands of electric lights switched on at the same instant. The power grid ran through steel and concrete, through the living room of every apartment, along every street lamp on every block. This was the year Thomas Edison left the world.
His name had already become a company worth billions of dollars, General Electric. It had already become thousands of thick files in the patent office. It had already become the invisible backdrop against which every modern city ran at night.
Twelve years later, on a deep winter night in January 1943, Room 3327 of the New Yorker Hotel. Eighty-six-year-old Nikola Tesla sat alone in a chair by the window, wearing an old suit jacket faded pale from washing. In the palm of his hand he held a small handful of corn kernels. A few white pigeons slipped in through the gap in the window and pecked at his fingertips.
On the corner of his desk sat a stack of overdue, unpaid rent bills. Next to them lay a whole stack of design blueprints that not a single investor was willing to look at again. Across the entire North American continent outside his window, every power plant, every transmission line, was carrying alternating current at sixty cycles per second, a picture he had already run to completion in his mind, countless times, thirty years before.
One man sent electricity into millions of homes. The other sat alone in a hotel room, feeding pigeons.
The Same Electricity, One Wired In Through the Front Door, One Lighting Itself From a Side Door
In BaZi there is a set of stars sharing a common source, called Resource stars (that which generates the Day Master; the resources, shelter, and nourishment fed in from outside over the course of a life).
Resource stars are the electricity that generates you. No matter how strong that electricity is, it can only enter through one of two directions: one is called Direct Resource (orthodox generative power; acceptance and shelter from within the system), the other is called Indirect Resource (unconventional generative power, also called the Owl God; a marginal perspective and unconventional insight).
Direct Resource is electricity wired in through the front door. It is a mother’s warmth, a mentor’s sponsorship, acceptance by the mainstream system, the sense of security that comes from having a backer. You look up, and the door is already open; someone has already plugged the cord in for you. You have a place inside this system. Someone is already paying for your talent. When you make mistakes, there is a wall standing there to shield you.
Indirect Resource is electricity that lights itself from a side door. There is no red carpet at the side door, and no one waiting there to receive you. You sit in a dark place with no one else in it, and strike your own match.
Precisely because no mainstream framework covers you, your eyes are not restricted. You can see dimensions that other people simply cannot see, and catch patterns that the mainstream perspective misses entirely. That is the third eye. The cost is that no one paves the road ahead of you on that path. Every cold stare and every moment of being misunderstood, you have to carry alone.
Thomas Edison is the ultimate expression of front-door power supply. He took the trust his mother left him, and the craft he trained up running telegraph lines as a teenage telegraph operator, and wired all of it, one step at a time, into the research team at Menlo Park, into J.P. Morgan’s Wall Street capital, into the legal umbrella of the United States Patent Office.
Nikola Tesla is the ultimate expression of side-door illumination. He needed no model, no sketch. On the strength of visualization inside his own head alone, he could run an entire complex alternating current motor in his consciousness for months at a time, and could calculate the precise degree of bearing wear with accuracy. He stood at the very front edge of his era, standing outside the side door that everyone else still could not even see.
Both Men Saw the Future of Electricity. One Became an Empire. The Other Became the Broke Man of Legend.
Put these two men side by side, and most people fall immediately into the same trap: did Edison win simply because he was smarter than Tesla, because he understood business better?
But open the papers and patents Tesla left behind, and this claim does not hold up at all. In alternating current systems, rotating magnetic fields, high-frequency induction coils, the forward-looking design of wireless communication, in pure understanding of the physical world, Tesla saw further and deeper than Edison did. Edison even mobilized enormous resources to publicly dramatize the dangers of alternating current, purely to protect his own direct current camp.
So if the gap was not one of talent, then what was it that let one man take capital and put down roots into an empire, while the other saw the future, and yet grew old and alone in a hotel room?
The answer does not lie in how strong the electricity was. It lies in whether there was a net behind that electricity, able to catch it.
BaZi calls this net “Wealth” (that which the Day Master controls; real-world load-bearing capacity, boundary sense, and the ability to convert things into value). Wealth is not just cash. It is more like a brake, like a ground wire: it takes abstract inspiration and energy and pulls it, all the way back, to a place that can stand on solid ground in the physical world.
Behind Edison’s front-door power supply stood an entire net woven out of capital, contracts, teams, and patents. Every unit of electrical energy produced had a channel that could turn it into light, into a product, into the resources to support the next experiment.
Tesla’s side-door illumination carried an unimaginably vast charge, yet it always lacked a net able to catch itself. He personally tore up his royalty contract with his own hands, gave up his patent income, and watched with his own eyes as the Wardenclyffe wireless power tower rusted and collapsed after funding was cut off.
When that vast charge kept running violently inside his body, with no ground wire able to bring it down to a load-bearing point in reality, it would turn back and burn through his own life instead.
Direct Resource takes root because a net carries its load; Indirect Resource has no net to catch it, and so it turns back and consumes itself.
Turning Every Unit of Incoming Electricity Into Weight That Can Hold Up Reality
In the autumn of 1878, in Menlo Park, New Jersey, a two-story wooden laboratory. Scattered across the wooden floor were carbonized bamboo filaments, glass test tubes, and coiled copper wire, and the air carried the smell of scorched plant fiber. Thirty-one-year-old Edison rubbed his eyes with oil-stained fingers, surrounded by more than twenty engineers and blacksmiths working in shifts, each of their desks piled with dozens of broken carbon filaments.
At that time, outside pressure was pressing down like a wall. The traditional gas lamp companies poured heavy money into newspaper advertisements warning that the electric light was an extremely dangerous toy. Inside the laboratory, the bamboo carbon filaments snapped every few dozen minutes, and research funds were nearly exhausted.
At the time, Wall Street’s most senior investors, along with university physics professors, issued public statements one after another, saying that splitting electric current across thousands of small light bulbs was physically impossible, and that gas lighting remained the best choice for city illumination. Behind that statement stood a full fifty years of mature urban infrastructure, and an entire commercial calculus that had already been proven to work.
Edison did not choose to fight the physics establishment alone. He brought in capital from the Morgan financial group, built up a legal team, and turned Menlo Park into the world’s first industrialized research factory. Every piece of data from every failed experiment was recorded in full, and turned into one patent defense line after another.
Here, the energy of front-door power supply was caught by a tight net of contracts and capital. This electricity did not scatter and dissipate; it was converted into countless mass-producible light bulbs and power plants, and eventually consolidated into General Electric. Once Direct Resource had the load-bearing support of Wealth, it was no longer merely a passive source of nourishment. It grew into a solid mountain, becoming the foundation that countless power engineers still walk on today.
Seeing the World Half a Century Ahead, Yet Unable to Catch Even Tonight
In May 1888, in an office in Pittsburgh, Nikola Tesla held in his hand a freshly drafted legal contract: for every horsepower of alternating current produced, he would receive 2.5 dollars in patent royalties. Standing across from him, George Westinghouse wore a heavy dark wool suit, his forehead beaded with anxious sweat.
At that time Westinghouse Electric was walking the edge of bankruptcy. Fighting the Current War against the Edison camp, and with Wall Street bankers pressing debts together in unison, the company could be liquidated at any moment.
Westinghouse’s own financial advisor told Tesla plainly, outside the door: if you do not tear up this royalty clause, the company will collapse today, and alternating current technology will be buried in the ground along with it. Your motors will never be installed in the power plants at Niagara Falls. This was not a threat. Every figure was written out clearly, in black and white, on the financial statements.
Tesla stood there for a few seconds, then, in front of George Westinghouse, tore that contract, worth tens of millions of dollars, into pieces. He chose to keep the technology alive, but with his own hands he also cut the net that could have caught the rest of his own life.
By 1901, construction began on the Wardenclyffe Tower on Long Island. Tesla wanted to build a tower that could transmit wireless telegraph messages across the Atlantic, and even send wireless electrical power to the entire globe. His backer, J.P. Morgan, nodded at first, drawn in by the commercial prospects of transatlantic communication.
But when he discovered that what Tesla truly wanted to do was send energy to every corner of the world for free, rather than build a commercial communication network he could charge for, capital withdrew immediately. In the end the great tower rusted in the wind and rain, and was torn down during the First World War, its steel sold off for scrap.
Indirect Resource’s third eye let him see the world half a century into the future, but he never built a ground wire for himself. This vast insight never converted into anything that could stand on solid ground in his own reality.
It spun in place inside him, roaring, and eventually arrived at the cruelest state in BaZi, the Owl Snatching the Meal (梟印奪食, the extreme condition of Indirect Resource running excessive with no Wealth star to regulate it). A man who had seen everything, yet could not even hold on to a single dinner, or a single bed of his own.
Is the Electricity Inside You Caught By a Net, Or Is It Burning Through You Right Now
Put these two men back into your own life, and you do not need to be a world-changing inventor to see traces of these same two currents in the people around you.
You definitely know the “front-door power supply” type of person: someone who grew up in a resource-rich family, or who was taken on as a trusted protégé the moment they joined a company by a powerful manager. They hold the best resources in hand, and move forward along a track the system has already laid down for them.
But if a chart contains nothing but an endless stream of Resource stars, with no brake or load-bearing capacity from Wealth at all, this front-door power supply can also run to another extreme — Mother Doting Destroys the Child (母慈滅子): the state where Direct Resource runs excessive with no Wealth star to carry its load, in which excessive protection and supply instead weaken the ability to survive independently and deliver real results.
They have been protected for too long, grown used to being looked after and fed. Once the umbrella outside is pulled away, they do not even know how to stand on their own two feet.
You have definitely also seen, at the next desk over at work, or in a corner at a class reunion, that side-door illumination type of person. They are the heretic of the team, always throwing out warnings in meetings that are unsettling yet unnervingly precise. They can tell, at a glance, exactly where the company’s way of operating will collapse a few years down the road.
But because they pour all their energy into insight, unwilling to spend time cultivating relationships, disdaining the calculation of business interests, too lazy to turn their ideas into a report anyone could actually execute — the result is that these ideas get set aside again and again, or get taken by someone more worldly and repackaged as their own achievement. They sit there, full of ambition, yet feeling as if the entire world has turned against them.
For a person whose chart runs strong on Direct Resource, what they should be looking at is not how many resources they have received, but whether they have the capacity to use Wealth to carry that load: forcing themselves to deliver real results, instead of continuing to soak in the greenhouse.
For a person whose chart runs sharp on Indirect Resource, what they should be looking at is not how profound their insight is, but whether they have built their own power grid and output channel, so that high-frequency energy has somewhere to land, instead of letting it turn back and burn through their own life and emotions instead.
You think the difference lies in whether the current comes in through the front door or the side door. But what truly decides whether you take root, or get burned through, was never how strong the electricity was. It was always whether there was a power grid able to catch it, and turn it into light.

Resource (印星)
The umbrella term for that which generates the Day Master, representing the nourishment, resources, knowledge, and protective barrier received from outside over the course of a life. It divides into two categories: Direct Resource and Indirect Resource.
Direct Resource (正印)
Orthodox resource and generative power, symbolizing acceptance from within the system, a mother’s shelter, orthodox scholarship, and a powerful backer. Tends to build stability and a sense of belonging.
Indirect Resource (偏印)
Unconventional generative power, also called the Owl God. It symbolizes a marginal perspective, self-directed learning, unconventional insight, and the third eye. Tends toward sharp intuition, but lacks institutional protection.
Wealth (財)
The umbrella term for that which the Day Master controls, representing real-world load-bearing capacity, boundary sense, commercial conversion, and the ability to ground things in reality. When Resource is running, it functions as the brake and the power grid.
Regulation (制化)
The process by which different Five Phase elements control and transform one another, bringing power that has grown excessive or unbalanced back into stable equilibrium.
Mother Doting Destroys the Child (母慈滅子)
The extreme state in which Direct Resource runs excessive with no Wealth star to carry its load. Excessive protection and supply of resources instead weaken the subject’s ability to survive independently and deliver real results.
Owl Snatching the Meal (梟印奪食)
The extreme state in which Indirect Resource runs excessive with no Wealth star to regulate it. Extreme detachment, overthinking, and unconventional insight cut off the ability to output and convert value in the real world, causing the energy to spin in place and turn back on itself.
